Before Football Broadcast Became Professional, Brazil was Already Doing it!

By: Bruno Romani | July 22nd, 2008

The 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s had one the most romantic ways of documenting Brazilian football. Short-documentaries with beautiful angles and dramatic narration were shown in the movie theatres before the actual movie started. The name of this “show” was “Canal 100″. Before the ultraprofessional broadcasts of today existed, Canal 100 added a romantic touch to the sport and its mixture of unseen angles with slow-motion made eveyone breathless in the theatres. In some ways, it was cool to go to the movies just to watch Canal 100. The theme song became synonim of Brazilian football. Or I should say of beautiful football. Through the lens of canal 100, idols such as Zico, Garrincha, Pele and Rivelino were seen throughout the country on a big screen. The importance of Canal 100 goes beyond the beauty of its images. Canal 100 documented moments of Brazilian football which has seem to be vanished, and helped to turn people into fans of certain clubs. Flamengo is the most popular Brazilian club also because of Canal 100. Usually, clubs from Rio were featured in the short-movies.

In the mid-90’s, Canal 100 was adjusted to the TV format. And by 2000, it was over. With this nostalgic feeling, I will post weekly on this blog videos of Canal 100. It is worthy.

Today, I will start with the most exciting age of Canal 100 in terms of beauty and reach in the country. (Besides that, I just love the late 70’s/early 80’s looks. It’s sooo Brazilian). The match is Flamengo 3 x 2 Sao Paulo for the Campeonato Brasileiro of 1982. Enjoy!
