Brazilian Championship: There is still some thrill left.
By: LP | November 25th, 2006
While I’m starting to blog here, the Brazilian Championship is coming to an end. This was a bipolar year where Internacional and São Paulo competed alone for the main tittles around here. Inter stop São Paulo from getting his forth continental title on a drizzling final at Porto Alegre but the “São Paulinos†got their revenge defeating with 2 rounds ahead their rival to conquer the national championship after 15 years.
This was also not a good year for the strikers. While in 1997 Edmundo scored 29 goals in 28 games leading Vasco to the national title, this year Souza leads the top-scorer list with 16 goals in 36 games. With Robinho, Fred and Tevez leading to Europe since last year and Romario trying to reach his 1000th goal in USA and Australia there was no one left to fill their shoes. Edmundo is still playing, but now, almost 10 years after that breaking the record for top-goalscorer in one season (29 goals) and top-goalscorer in 1 game (6 goals against União São João) in ‘97 he is just not the same “Animal†as he used to be.
However, the championship did not lack goals. This was the season of the united group, where limited teams like Vasco, Grêmio and Paraná found there way to the top.
With only 2 rounds left, the main fight of the tournament is who will get the last two vacancies for “Taça Libertadores da Américaâ€. Santos with 60 points, Vasco with 57 and Paraná with 56 will compete for it until the last minute. Therefore, you might take a look at Vasco x Santos game tomorrow. While Santos can guarantee for sure his place at the continental tournament, Vasco is fighting to not only reach his rival but also to not let Paraná overpass it. I will be there myself.
