Copa do Brasil: Another Weird Final

By: Bruno Romani | May 24th, 2007

As I’ve said before: since CBF prohibited the clubs that play the Libertadores to participate in the Copa do Brasil, the tournament keeps getting weird finals. 2007 is no exception.

Botafogo and Figueirense played at the Maracanã, with the visitors having a 2-0 advantage obtained in Florianópolis. Botafogo scored 2-0 and was taking the match to the penalties when at the 44th mark into the second-half Julio César, Botafogo’s keeper, made a historical mistake and conceded the goal to the visitors. After the goal of Cleiton Xavier, Botafogo managed to score again just 4 minutes later. But it was too late. Figueirense, headed by the ex-forward Mario Sérgio, will play for the first time a final at the national stage. The home team complained a lot of assistant Ana Paula de Oliveira, but after the help they got from Carlos Eugenio Simon against Atlético-MG, they should just shut up.

Mario Sérgio will face his ex-teammate at Grêmio Renato Gaúcho, Fluminense’s coach. The club from Rio tied 1-1 against Brasiliense at the Boca do Jacaré. The home team needed a 2-0 score and put pressure on Fluminense, hitting the post twice in the second-half. Fluminense reach the finals at the national stage after a long time.

It will be boring. And Figueirense are the favorites.
