Hopes for 2007
By: LP | December 27th, 2006Unlike in Europe, the Brazilian season starts in January and goes all the way until December. Every state has its own championship that ends in April, while the “Brasileirão” goes from May to December.
Therefore, by this time of the year, there are only gossips and hopes for the next season. Teams are buying and selling players, renewing contracts and trying to start the year ready for conquer titles.
In São Paulo, the national champion took ahead and brought some replacements for those who left. They start 2007 as one of the favorites in every competition they play. Santos kept the team that qualified them for Libertadores and are still looking for some more. Palmeiras and Corinthians are trying to renew its teams after a bad 2006 but their managers are showing all their incompetence to do it. Corinthians is a total mess. Nobody can even say if MSI will or will not keep their players there.
In Rio people are expecting a better year. They were the main stage for the national football for many decades but after years and years of pure amateurism on its management the Cariocas have been more worried about staying on Serie A then fighting for titles. In 2006 Vasco, Flamengo and Botafogo showed some progress. Vasco is trying to keep its entire team that finished as 6th at the national championship and Flamengo is getting stronger to play the next Copa Libertadores da America. Fluminense, which had a terrible 2006, is renewing its entire team for the next season. But without money, the teams from Rio can celebrate if they end 2007 qualifing for the continental competition.
In Rio Grande do Sul Gremio is having problem to keep the team that got them the 3rd place last year. They lost Hugo for São Paulo and Lucas might be heading for Europe while its rival Internacional is still celebrating the victory against Barcelona. The World’s Champions might loose Fabiano Eller and Indio but they will find replacements and will probably be São Paulo’s biggest rival in every competition again.
We can also take a look on Cruzeiro. Their team didn’t bring any big name yet but with a fine planning they always hope for titles.
The year 2007 doesn’t start with much difference from 2006. São Paulo and Inter are the favorites. There wasn’t any important acquisition yet but there is still a lot of time left to it

So, let me try and get this right. They play the first few months in a few separate leagues, then the best of out of each goes into the big thing?

Sam, I wished it was that simple. I’ll try to explain it on my next post, ok?
