Linesman Killed in Rio de Janeiro

By: Bruno Romani | June 25th, 2008

Linesman Paulo Sérgio Durães Fernandes was killed this Wednesday in a restaurant in Rio de Janeiro. Witnesses said the ref argued with a man before getting shot in the chest. He was taken to the hospital, but did not resist. The man who shot fled the scene, and police said it will investigate the case.

Fernandes was also a Police Officer. Yes, in Brazil being a referee is a not professional activity. And CBF could not care less about it. Fernandes’ last match was Saturday in the 1-0 victory of Sao Paulo over Sport.

I hesitate to ask, but, what restaurant? My next trip, I’ll probably try my best to avoid said location. Hope it’s not Bibi’s Crepes… my semi-hangout in Copacabana, or Mister Pizza on Rubiero…
    Damn, I love that town!
