Maracanã Stores Illegal Beer

The newspaper Folha de S. Paulo reports that employees at the Maracanã found inside the stadium a clandestine storage with 12 thousand cans of beer. The storage was above the ceiling of the seats section. The beers loaded a full truck.

The state secretary of sports, tourism and entertainment João Paes believes that the beers were to be sold tonight during Copa do Brasil’s final between Fluminense and Figueirense. Rio de Janeiro’s state is in charge of the Maracanã.

The secretary believes that employees from the stadium may be involved in an illegal system to dribble the security and sell the beer during important games. The commercialization of beverages in the stadium is under a concession to a third party company.

Paes said that cars loaded with beverages have been seen before at night close to the stadium. Two months ago, a police officer was found inside the stadium with a truck full of beverages. He was arrested and killed a few days later after he left prison. The secretary believes that the group responsible for the beer smuggling will be caught soon.

This is not the first strange thing to happen in the Maracanã. In the early 90’s, the old administration of the stadium found that a man had been living inside the stadium for years using gaps in the “geral” section. The “home” even had electricity and a bed.
