Stadium Collapses: 7 Killed and Over 70 Injured
By: Bruno Romani | November 26th, 2007Bahia, traditional club in Brazil, played for série C, the third division of the Campeonato Brasileiro. With the 0-0 draw against Vila Nova from Goiás, the 60 thousand fans went crazy. But what was supposed to be a huge party became the worst tragedy in the history of Brazilian football. Part of the stadium collapsed, creating a hole that sucked fans to a 15 meters fall. Seven people died and over 40 are injured.
Fonte Nova, the stadium where the tragedy happened, was built in the 50’s and never went through a reform. The portion of the stadium that collapsed was built in the 70’s and also has never been touched again. As usual, the case is another situation of negligence. Earlier this year, the National Union of Architecture pointed many structural defects dangerous to the lives of fans. It is the worst stadium in a city that wants to be in the 14 World Cup.
This is the country that will host a World Cup. Welcome!
