U-20 WC: Brazil Disappointing…

By: Bruno Romani | June 30th, 2007

The moment is not a good one to Brazilian football. The transition of generations is hard. Today the U-20 World Cup started, showing some of the players who will be in 2014. Like the adult team, it was disappointing.

Many similarities between today and the game against Mexico: a coach who doesn’t know what he is doing, a team with a broken connection between midfield and attack, useless strikers (Jô), shy talents (Pato, Leandro Lima, Marcelo) and a free-kick that killed the team.

The young players also did something that happens all the time to Brazilian clubs. They don’t know how to play against a side that had a player sent off. Poland had a player sent off still in the first-half, and not even that helped the team. End of the game, Poland won.

The only thing that gives fans some hope is that all the time Brazilian football is under pressure, it rises from the dead like a phoenix.

I don’t think I can ever remember seeing Brazilian teams play like they have lately. They’ve lost that flair that used to make Brazil fun to watch, even if they were killing the team you were supporting. I hope they can get themselves back into Copa America - I miss watching them play at their best.

Talking about teams — other than that national team and Dunga embarrasment — since Rio’s Biggy is “closed-for-renovation” for the Pan Am Games, it appears they’ve finally chosen to have Tuesday and Wednesday games here in Rio (am on vacation, and thought I’d not get a chance to see them!!) — WHERE, pray tell. Sufficient seating?
-(and Bruno, you may e-mail me personally if you wish with tips as to where and when, assuming you have the info — much thanks, or, muito obrigado!)

frost, these are the games in Rio on Tuesday:

16h Vasco x Santos @ São Januário, Rio De Janeiro

20h30 Fluminense x Parana Clube @ Raulino de Oliveira, Volta Redonda

I think going to Volta Redonda to watch Fluminense x Parana is not good business. The time, the match…
Vasco and Santos is better, but Sao januario is always weird. it’s far (sao cristovao), the stadium is not good, and fans of vasco and santos are rivals…. Anyway. have fun…ahaha

    The other games on Tuesday:

    9ª RODADA
    Terça-feira, 03 de julho

16h Sport x Corinthians @ Ilha do Retiro, Recife

    16h Atlético-MG x Flamengo @ Mineirão, Belo Horizonte

19h30 Figueirense x Cruzeiro @ Orlando Scarpelli, Florianópolis

    20h30 Palmeiras x América-RN @ Parque Antarctica, São Paulo

20h30 São Paulo x Internacional @ Morumbi, São Paulo

20h30 Grêmio x Juventude @ Olímpico Monumental, Porto Alegre

    20h30 Atlético-PR x Náutico-PE @ Arena da Baixada, Curitiba

One more thing — the mixed emotions bit. North Americans, especially from the US love underdogs, like Vasco - - but we special order Satos coffee? Who to cheer for is the question (a mild and futile attempt at humor…).

i feel like i should comment, even though i haven’t ever followed the brazilian teams. [i'm more of an azzurri girl].
there was no way, absolutely no way for cassio to save that goal. it was a gorgeous kick, and cassio tried, but just could not. this is from someone who was behind the net as it happened. i only have pictures, as i am an idiot and did not take video of this kick. poland were the better team, even with a player out. i truly hope that the boys can pick themselves up, as i do not think i can walk into their locker room after another loss.

Hope that Brazil U-17 team will do better than their senior Copa and U-20 team. Hope there are more players can easily replace players like Ronaldinho and Kaka who has no more pride to wear the yellow 5 stars jersey.
