Winter is Coming to Campeonato Brasileiro (And a Club Loses Its Virginity)
By: Bruno Romani | June 1st, 2008What a boring weekend for the Campeonato Brasileiro. Besides the two draws mentioned in the post below, many more boring matches took place. Maybe it is the winter.
In São Paulo, Palmeiras played enough to win by the minimal difference against Atlético-PR. Alex Mineiro scored against his old club. But the visitors did not play that bad.
Coritiba stopped leader Cruzeiro. 1-1. And Coritiba’s Michel appears as one of the great promises of the season. Remember: you heard about him first here!
4th round and 4 clubs have not won yet. One of them is São Paulo. The other 3 are: Goiás, Portuguesa and Fluminense. Goiás visited Figueirense and tied in a match without goals. In other situations, not a bad result, but Goiás needs to win. Fluminense sent a bunch of reserves for the derby against Flamengo. Fla won with a penalty-kick taken by Leonardo Moura. Flu is the last club in the table. This is the Libertadores effect.
Portuguesa visited and lost against Atlético-MG 2-0. The locals not only got their first victory in the tournament, but they were dressing nice kits (one each-half) to celebrate their 100th birthday. The other club to get its first victory of the season was Ipatinga. Yes, that was the FIRST victory ever of the club in first division. The defeated club was Vitória, Ipatinga’s division-mate last year in Série B. There’s nothing like losing your virginity with someone you know. Renato and Adeilson scored.
Probably, the most exciting match of the weekend was the comeback of Vasco against the consistent side of Grêmio. Vasco put together whatever was left from the elimination of Copa do Brasil, and Jean scored twice in the 2-1 victory.
Naútico kept the power of Northeastern football by thrashing Botafogo 3-0. But this matche deserves a post of its own. (above).
