Last Sunday, Palmeiras beat Santos 2-1. Today, Canal 100 Tuesday brings to you another Palmeiras – Santos. This is the final of the 1959 State Championship. Santos was already one of the greatest sides to step on Earth, with Pele, Coutinho, Jair da Rosa Pinto, Durval, Zito and Pepe. Pele opened the score for Santos. But Palmeiras had Julinho Botelho, another legend of Brazilian football. He tied the match. And Palmeiras won the match for 2-1, like last Sunday ( but with much more talent back then). This was one the few times the great Santos of Pele was stopped. Enjoy!

ps:Julinho has a great story. He declined the call for the 1958 World Cup for a peculiar reason. He said that since he wasn’t playing in Brazil at he time, it would not be far with those playing in Brazil that he played for the national team. What a story. Can’t imagine that happening today. But it is a great a idea, anyway.

Canal 100 Tuesday (did I say Tuesday? Late again!) is here in double edition to make-up for the lateness. On the weekend, Atletico-MG visited Flamengo and put an end to Flamengo’s dreams of lifting the Brazilia title for the sixth (fifth?) time. But back in the day, Flamengo was the one imposing painful losses to Atletico. The first video is the final of the 1980 Campeonato Brasileiro, the first time Fla won the tournament. For a crowd of 154 thousand fans, Zico and his teammates started to make history. Playing for Atletico, world class players such as Reinaldo, Toninho Cerezo and Eder (the last two were later called for the 82 World Cup.)

In the second video, the two clubs face each other a year later for the 1981 Copa Libertadores. Known to be a kock-out which the ref had a great influence, Flamengo eliminated Atletico and won its first and only continental title. The video shows the first leg which was played at Mineirao and ended with a 2 draw

After the great victory on last Sunday’s Grenal, Inter fans are very happy. In order to keep the high spiritsthe late edition of Canal 100 Tuesday brings rare images of a Grenal played in 1972, year which Inter won for the 4th time in a row the state championship. This was just the beginning of a era ruled by Inter conducted by the genious of Paulo Roberto Falcao. Funny detail of the video is the completely mispelled sign shown by the Inter fan. Besides that, it is nice to see matches of Canal 100 which clubs from Rio are not the main characters, which was very rare. Therefore, really enjoy this!

In the 90’s, Canal 100 became a TV series aired on TV Manchete, a channel that no longer exists. The screen got smaller, but the emotions and asthetics remained. If the size took away some of the emotions, being on TV allowed the documentaries to be longer. This is how Canal 100 documented the highest moment of the history of Botafogo. The Brazilian title of 95. Today, Canal 100 Tuesday features the video with the 2 matches involving Botafogo and Santos. Tulio, the 39 year-old striker who is still playing, was on the top of his shape. Rumours this week said that he may be returning in 2009. Watch why Botafogo fans still want him. Few things to notice:

1) Interview with a young Paulo Autuori, the man rumored to replace Dunga.
2)Tulio wearing the number 7 because Botafogo’s sponsor at the time was 7-Up.
3)Tulio celebrating a goal like Pele because Edinho, Pele’s son, was the goalie of Santos.

Enjoy!

Anyway, I know Canal 100 has lots of images from the national team in their archives, but very little is on Youtube. So I hope you enjoy these beautiful and rare images.

Late again. But on Tuesday it was the 98th Anniversary of Corinthians. As a tribute, I searched for images of the club seen through the lens of Canal 100. Couldn’t find much stuff, but what I found is sweet. It is the historical goal of Basilio in the 1977 state championship final against Ponte Preta. After 23 years Corinthians was lifting a trophy. The version I found removed the narration of Canal 100 to add the thrilling voice of Osmar Santos, one of the greatest radio commentators in Brazil (later he had a brain injury in a car accident and was forced to stop). Only for today I’m gonna mess with the original version. As Santos says in the video “party of the people”. This is Corinthians. Enjoy!

With the end of the Olympics, Canal 100 Tuesday is back. Today, I went further inthe past. The match is for the 1965 Rio State Championship. Bangu, once a traditional side from Rio, thrashed Flamengo with a 3-0. Look at the third goal by Paulo Borges. It’s pure genius. The nice twist about this match is that the creator of Canal 100 was a Flamengo fan (which also helps to explain why Flamengo is so popular in Brazil), and for this match, they had everything ready for a Flamengo celebration. Not only it did not happen, but also Bangu humiliated the rival. Here, the end of the video has been cut, but in the original version, as Bangu celebrated the victory, the anthem of Flamengo could be heard on the background. Another trick by the creators. Enjoy.
