The two most important prizes choosing the best players of Campeonato Brasileiro were both handed on Monday. One, the most traditional, is called Bola de Prata (silver ball) and it is offered by Placar, the most important magazine on football in Brazil, since 1971. The choices are made in the following way: the journalists from the magazine watch every single game and give notes to players. The best average in each position wins. Also, the best average of the tournament takes Bola de Ouro (golden ball). The magazine also offers a prize to the top striker.

The other prize is newer and it is offered by CBF. In this one, the coaches, the captains and a jury vote on their choices for each position. The best player, the best coach, the top striker and the best new talent are also awarded.

Pay attention because except for Rogerio Ceni, most of the two lists are very likely to leave Brazil. On the other hand, staying in Brazil helps accumulating awards. Rogerio Ceni reached his 6th Bola de Prata (passing Zico) and this time he took home the Golden Ball too. In the same way, Muricy Ramalho, Sao Paulo coach, took home his 4th prize as the best coach in 4 editions of the CBF’s award.

Compare the two teams and tell me which one you like.

Placar – Silver Ball:
GK: Rogerio Ceni (Sao Paulo)
RB:Vitor (Goias)
D:Andre Dias (Sao Paulo)
D:Miranda (Sao Paulo)
LB: Juan (Flamengo)
DM: Hernanes (Sao Paulo)
DM: Ramirez (Cruzeiro)
OM: Wagner (Cruzeiro)
OM: Tcheco (Gremio)
F: Borges (Sao Paulo)
F: Nilmar (Inter)

Golden Ball: Rogerio Ceni (Sao Paulo)

CBF’s Selecao do Campeonato

GK: Vitor (Gremio)
RB: Leo Moura (Flamengo)
D: Thiago Silva (Fluminense)
D: Miranda (Sao Paulo)
LB: Juan (Flamengo)
DM: Hernanes (Sao Paulo)
DM: Ramirez (Cruzeiro)
OM: Diego Souza (Palmeiras)
OM: Alex (Inter)
F: Kleber Pereira (Santos)
F: Alex Mineiro (Palmeiras)

Coach: Muricy Ramalho (Sao Paulo)

Best Player: Hernanes (Sao Paulo)
Best new talent:Keirrisson (Coritiba)
Best Player According to fans: Thiago Silva (Fluminense)

Placar also showed the worst averages of the tournament, known as “Bola de Lata”:

GK: Clemer (Inter)
RB: Carlinhos (Fluminense)
D:Jorge Luis (Vasco)
D:Negretti (Nautico)
LB:Willian Matheus
DM: Alceu (Nautico)
DM:Fabio Gomes (Sport)
OM:Luciano Mandi (Ipatinga)
OM: Ramon (Figueirense)
F: Enilton (Sport)
F: Washington (Portuguesa)

The curious thing is that 3 of these men were in the starting line-up of Palmeiras when they last played Copa Libertadores in 2006. Alceu, Enilton and Washington were there. And you wonder why the club failed…

Ronaldo’s goal, according to someone linked with Corinthians, is the 2010 World Cup, and playing in Brazil for a paulista club is a great choice. The club already started selling jerseys.

On the other hand, Flamengo, whom Ronaldo fed the hopes of fans during all this time, was caught by surprise. The fan movement “Fica Ronaldo” (Stay Ronaldo) is already talking about burning pictures of the forward.

Great to see another huge name back to Brazil.

If anyone still needed a proof of how football blogs is something for people with nothing better to do, he it is. After retiring, Romario, the legendary striker, decided to become a blogger. His site is http://www.blogdoromario.com.br/. In one of the posts he writes:

“Coach career? I’m out. I prefer the career of a blogger. I never liked to wake up early. I was always the last one to arrive to the training sessions. Imagine that as a coach I’d have to be the first one to arrive (I wanna see Maradona).

I’m always on the search for pleasure (listen to me, bro) and one of my pleasures now will be writing”

In other words, as a blogger Romario does not need to wake up early. I wish you could understand Portuguese, but the baixinho surprisingly writes with tone and style. It sounds like him talking. It looks like something far from being a PR thing.

However, as a true blogger, Romario already forgot to update his page. His excuse is “lack of time”. Can anyone tell me what he is doing?

After the 2-0 victory of Inter over Boca Juniors for Copa Sulamericana, the website of Inter asked in bold letters: “Who Plays Better Than Alex in Brazil?”

In a very conservative answer, I’d say he is one of the best right now. However, the proper answer is “he is kicking ass”. Watch the highlights below. Forget all the crappy names The Offside asked you to remember. Alex trully is a name to keep in your mind. Not only he scored two great goals, but he created a lot. Watch for yourself.

The blog also wants to congratulate Inter for taking the Sulamericana (before, you come here saying “hey dude, you mispelled the name of the cup”, I’d like to remember that this is the Portuguese version for the name) seriously. I know they’re doing this just because they’re dead in Campeonato Brasileiro, but it is about time one Brazilian club will win this competition to show to the other ones that a international competition is always a good thing. No matter crappy it may look from the outside. After winning Libertadores and the Club World Cup in 06, Inter learned to appreciate international trophies. Thinking like this, the colorado suffocated the second team of Boca from beginning to end.

Other Brazilian Cubs

With the other Brazilian clubs in the competition, more frustration. The second team of Palmeiras lost to Argentino Juniors at home. This is the equivalent of Sport Recife visiting River Plate and beating them at home.

For Botafogo, this is the time of the year which they allow a bunch of goals in a short period of time against an Argentinean club. No surprises in the match against Estudiantes. The only entertaining thing was the post game interview with the the club’s vice-president, Carlos Augusto Montenegro. He said the players are divided in two groups: one led by trouble boy Carlos Alberto and one by Lucio Flavio. The one led by Carlos Alberto is going against the club due to late salaries. I’m sure Carlos Alberto will dismiss that interview, but considering his history of trouble everywhere he has been, I’m confident Montenegro is right.

With a career full of highlights (not only for the good football), Edmundo does not cease to make into the headlines. At the age of 37, the forward is back after playing as a goalkeeper for Vasco. In the match, his club lost 3-1 at home for Cruzeiro, who moved to the second spot in the league. Cruzeiro was leading 2-1 (Guilherme and Ramirez had scored for the visitors) when goalie Tiago was ejected after making a penalty. Because Vasco had made the 3 subs, Edmundo went for the most under appreaciated position of football. Even losing, the fans were very supportive, but the Animal could not stop Guilherme, who scored the final goal of the match. After that, Edmundo made two good saves, giving the only moments celebration for the fans.

Emotional as usual, the forward cried after the match and said that refs keep stealing his club and that Cruzeiro players kept saying humilliating things throughout the match. Don’t cry Edmundo. We promise you won’t be the goalie in the next round.

Highlights (including lots of tears and words you won’t find in a Portuguese-English dictionary):

Brazil started as the underdog. A smell of inferiority complex was in the air. Germany scored in a mistake of Érika. Germany missed a few other chances. But that lasted only 25 minutes. From that point, Brazil became powerful. It humiliated Germany. The current World Champs did not see the ball in the second half. Many goals were missed. And another 4 visited the net. Marta scored a goal typical of people like Ronaldo or Romario. Pure genius. Cristiane another two. In the second one, the passed through 4 defenders. The defenders (even Érika) and defensive midfielders were brilliant. The reward for those players came in the goal by Formiga. Keeper Barbara made two impressive saves. The fans started screaming “ole”. We got our revenge from last year’s World Cup, and the “underdogs” are one more time in a final. It is about time to carve their names in history.
