Botafogo Has a New Stadium and a Innocent Striker

By: Bruno Romani | August 3rd, 2007

Friday with good news for leader Botafogo.

Dodô was declared innocent in his appeal in the High Court of Desportive Justice. With 5 votes to 3, the forward is free to play again for the carioca side. Previously, he had been suspended for 120 days . Dodô was caught in anti-doping  test for the use of a substance found in diet pills. He claimed to be innocent, and that the substance was accidentally mixed in the caffeine pills that Botafogo often gives to its players prior to matches. The precedent for taking substances by accident is open, and Botafogo displays once more its good connections with the people in charge of Brazilian football.

On another note, the club won the bid to gain control over João Havelange stadium, also known as Engenhão, one of the main legacies of the Pan-American games for the city of Rio de Janeiro. The club will have control over the stadium for the next 20 years, paying a monthly fee of R$ 36, 000 (about U$ 18,000) and absorbing all the costs of keeping it running. The stadium, the most modern in Brazil, was built by the city of Rio de Janeiro and its cost, R$ 330 million, suspected of being inflated. Botafogo wins the bid after being the only club placing one.

Where is it located? I was down in Rio a short while ago, prior to the PanAm thing, and didn’t see or hear about its possibly being taken over by a private club, nor where it is…..

    Guess I missed something.
