Botafogo’s Defender is Arrested on the Pitch
By: Bruno Romani | June 2nd, 2008Náutico received Botafogo at the Aflitos stadium. The match was 1-0 for the locals when Botafogo’s defender André Luís was sent off. Not happy with the red card, the defender gave the big middle finer for Náutico fans as he left the pitch, kicked a bottle of water who hit a few fans and tried to remain seated on the bench instead of going to the dressing room. Referee Wilson Luiz Seneme asked the police to take the player from the pitch.
Confusion set in, and the officers arrested the defender on the pitch. André Luíz started to argue and was arrested for misbehavior and offense towards the police. The other players tried to protect him and chaos took over the field in a battle bewteen police and Botafogo players. And the players were not alone. When the confusion started, Botafogo’s President Bebeto de Freitas jumped in and was taken to the station as well.
Bebeto claims that the local police had been over the top.The police claims that the two were disrespectful and unstoppable.
4 hours later, André Luíz was sentenced to a fine over R$ 10 thousand (little more than US$ 5 thousand). Bebeto de Freitas refused to pay his fine, and the case has been handed to the Public Ministry.
The final score was 3-0 for Náutico.

What a crazy situation. I think the people to blame in this story are the referee and the police.
It shouldn’t have been a yellow card, as Andre Luiz touched the ball. This is a mistake that can happen, but why does the referee send the police to take him out from the field? The referee can stop the game if he wants, but sending the police is too harsh, Andre Luiz is not a criminal.
Then of course the police come and use too much brutality. Instead of asking the player to come with them, they grab him like he is an animal. Poor Andre Luiz, he got in troubles with the police for a foul, a foul he didn’t even commit…
Thanks Bruno for this story and for your other interesting posts.
