First Round: First Coach is Gone, Bad Visitors, Mediocre Sides
By: Bruno Romani | May 13th, 2007Sunday, the first round of the campeonato brasileiro had 7 matches.Santos and Grêmio decided to save their main player for the Libertadores and had big losses against Sport and Paraná respectively. The peixe was the guest at Sport’s welcome party in the first division and lost 4-1. The same way, Grêmio will come back to Porto Alegre with a 3-0 loss for Paraná in the pocket.
Palmeiras and Botafogo, on the other hand, were the visitors who behaved badly. The first went to Maracanã and had an excellent performance against Flamengo, winning by 4-2. Edmundo scored twice and now is in the third in the list of players with the most goals in the history of the brasileirão. Flamengo started another season poorly, and saw goalie Bruno to concede a strange goal in the first-half. For Palmeiras, the championship started well, and now the club struggles to keep the performance. The club usually starts well championships and has huge drops in its performance.
Botafogo visited Inter at the Beira-Rio and won 3-2 playing with only 10 players for the most part of the game.
The other three games exposed clubs that will fight against poor campaigns. Corinthians had a mediocre game against Juventude, but won with a goal by the just hired striker Finazzi. With the result, Ivo Wortmann, Juventude’s coach, decided to leave the club in what seems to be a new record in the campeonato brasileiro. One-round, one coach out.
América-RN managed to lose by 1-0 at home against Vasco, a side that scares no one. América-RN is serious candidate to be the last club in the table.
Finally, Atlético-MG had to wait until the 49th mark into the second-half to have its comeback against Naútico at home.
