Nobody Bothers Botafogo

By: Bruno Romani | July 16th, 2007

So you thought I wasn’t gonna report on the 11th round of the Brasileiro? Got it wrong.

The effort all the clubs are doing to not bother Botafogo in the fist spot in the table is remarkable. The club from Rio visited Santos at the Vila, and found another good performance put on by Luxemburgo’s team. With goals in the second-half, Santos scored a 3-0, imposing Botafogo’s first loss in the league. Not a problem.

Goiás visited the weakened side of Cruzeiro and lost by 2-1. The green team tied the game with 10 minutes left in the match, but just 4 minutes later, Cruzeiro scored the goal that took it to the 8th spot.

São Paulo played the paulista derby against Corinthians. There were fights all over the city of São Paulo and one São Paulo fan is in coma at the hospital. The rivalry received a special flavor with São Paulo 4 year or 12 match series without a loss against the rival. The timão also went to the pitch with all the external problems involving its officials and MSI. With that, the black and white side played a better match at the Morumbi in the first-half, but had difficulties with the low skills of its creative sector. In the second-half, São Paulo improved and got a goal through Dagoberto with only 10 minutes left. When it seemed that the tricolor was going to pull another victory, Zelão tied the match in the overtime. The draw wasn’t good for both sides.

Palmeiras and Grêmio, two clubs growing in the competition, tied 1-1 in Porto Alegre, slowing the progress of both sides. Paraná Clube was defeated by Figueirense, 2-1, at home. Botafogo has all the reasons to smile. The only club to fill the gap was Vasco, whose 1-0 victory against Atlético-PR at home, took the club to the 5th spot.

In the bottom half of the table, Sport killed Atlético-MG with a 2-0 victory in Recife. Juventude and Naútico tied 1-1, keeping both clubs in the relegation zone, and América was defeated by Internacional, 2-1, at home, remaining as the last team in the table.

Cruzeiro weakened? Not at all my friend, Cruzeiro as well as Goiás got back lots of players in this round. Cruzeiro got back three or four players from injury if I’m not mistaken. As for Goiás they got back three players as well. Both teams were much stronger than previous rounds.

Not at all. Cruzeiro may be much worse than they were in 2000 or 2003, but certainly not as bad as 2004 or 2005. Our board keeps selling our best players and last season our bad finishing was thanks to bad replacements hired by the directors to replace the 13 or so players that injured themselves. And Cruzeiro are playing decent, the lost to Santos and Figueirense were because of the massive amounts of players either injured, suspended or at the U-20 World Cup. Other than that and a slow start we have won 4/6 of our last games. Our defense my be pathetic (we have allowed 23 goals), but we also scored that amount and only Botafogo can match our offense. Goiás is much better than our side, yes I’m well aware, I even made reference to this in one of my posts. What you were trying to say then is that Cruzeiro is weak not weakened.

No, if you are referring to years past, this Cruzeiro team is not the weakest, there has been a lot of worst Cruzeiro teams. And if you are referring to other rounds in this years championship you’d still be wrong. Cruzeiro last round was much stronger than against Santos in the previous round.

in future rounds you may improve. I’m not saying that. But right now, as we speak, cruzeiro is mediocre. 8th spot is the best spot in the league, and you’re still thinking it’s great? Worst defense and still you think it’s great? not even in 2005 it was like this. gosh, you guys had higher standards….but you’re right. you’re a fan and must protect the image of your club.

    weakened side for cruzeiro’s tradition.

Thank you. But I think that you are not understanding me. I admitted that we have a bad defense and I said we weren’t all that good. And I except with open arms the fact that Cruzeiro is not doing that good. Anywhere between 10th through 1st is good for me. I’m not saying Cruzeiro is great. All I said is that the side that played Goiás was better than the side that played Santos (we got back 3 players from injuries). Traditionally yes, we have high standard like in the 70’s and 90’s, but I’m also saying that Cruzeiro has played worse than this in the 21st century. By the way, (just out of curiosity) what team do you support, I’m guessing São Paulo?

I think you’re putting too much effort into a word I used one time in a post nobody usually reads.

Hmmmmm, methinks Bruno doesn’t like Cruzeiro a’tall, ‘ay? One certainly could get that impression…
What I usually like about that team (and a very few others) is their capacity to “light-up the (proverbial) scoreboard” as I’m usually wagering the “over.”
But, just reading this site can be so damned educational!
Now, if only Mr. Wolfrum’s political views were as astute as his futebol observations…? (smile)

Anyway, at Nautico tomorrow? 4-5-6 goals scored? Should be interesting.

    Okay, Bruno…
Flamingo & Parana, and Figueirense-Sport should also score a bit today, and I’ll take the “under” with SaoPaulo-Big Flu. Cruzeiro and Athletico MG should also win as well — fun season.
