Santos and São Paulo Ressurect in the 6th Round of the Brasileirao

By: Bruno Romani | June 18th, 2007

The sixth round of the Brasileirão watched two favorites finally to step in the tournament. São Paulo and Santos both won their matches by 2-0, and bringing winds of hope to their ever hungry fans. The similarities do not stop there: both clubs scored their goals in the first-half, both scored the first goal before the second minute of action, and both played against teams that are not exactly powerful squads.São Paulo received Vasco at the Morumbi and after two months had its attack scoring a goal. Borges, the man replacing Dagoberto, scored twice, and gave some extra-time to Muricy Ramalho ahead of the tricolor.

Santos lost Luxemburgo for the game against Juventude, but he is problem is very different of the one Muricy may be facing soon. The coach had an appendicitis on Thursday night and was replaced by ex-striker Serginho Chulapa. Not really. It caught the attention of the cameras and fans that Serginho was giving a cell-phone to players on the bench and on the pitch to get instructions from Luxemburgo. Cléber Santana and Marco Aurélio scored the goals in Caxias do Sul.

Another comeback in this Sunday of resurrections was the right-back Paulo Baier. He got his revenge against Palmeiras, club in which he got very criticized during the time he spent there. Baier returned to Goiás and gave passes to the 3 goals of his club in the match. With the 3-1 victory, Goiás sends Palmeiras to the 11th spot after a good beginning. This seems to be the trend with Palmeiras season after season. Palmeiras is like the falling kite that landed on the field during the game, making players and ref to laugh.

The club that is above expectations and remains in the first spot is Botafogo. Despite the penalty missed by Dodô, the bizarre goal conceded by goalie Julio César and the not total development of its typical game, the lonely-star beat Naútico by 3-1 at the Maracanã. Coach Cuca said no to an offer from Saudi Arabia, and is building a well arranged team.

Another new coach who is doing a brilliant job is ex-goalie Zetti. He took the limited squad of Atlético-MG to the top 4 with an impressive 4-1 victory against Figueirense at the Mineirão. Zetti’s ex-teammate and new coach Pintado is also doing very well with Paraná, despite the boring and dragging match against Corinthians on Saturday. The club is on the third spot, just behind Corinthians who surprisingly is in second.

Still on Saturday, Cruzeiro and Grêmio escaped the relegation zone. The former won against the second team of the latter by 2-0. But Grêmio escaped just because Flamengo tied against Inter at the Maracanã by 2-2. Inter scored two beautiful goals, but it allowed Flamengo to tie.

The round had two other ties. Atlético-PR and Fluminense ended with the 1 draw. The clubs were equal on the plasticity of the goals. Denis Marques, for Atlético, and Thiago Silva for the Flu got great shots after dribbling defenders. Finally, two northeastern teams tied and both are in the relegation zone. Sport and América-RN tied by 2-2. The polemic feature of the game was América’s coach Lori Sandri. He was taken to the Police district under the charge of misbehavior towards the police officers who took him out of the pitch after he was sent off.
