Summary of Wednesday in the Copa Libertadores
By: Bruno Romani | April 19th, 2007Oh Copa Libertadores! The best tournament in the world. This Wednesday, 3 Brazilian clubs played matches and defined their ticket to the knock-out stage.
São Paulo went to Peru, and faced Alianza Lima. The tricolor saved some of its usual starters for Saturday’s semifinal of the Paulista league, but had no difficulty beating the home team by the score of 1-0. Borges took his chance in the starting line-up and with a header in the 45th mark into the first half gave the victory to São Paulo. After five games in the group stage, the Brazilian side finally reached the first spot in the group.
In Rio, Flamengo wanted revenge against Real Potosí from Bolivia for having to play four thousand meters above sea level in the first half of the group stage. The Brazilians won, but the score of 1-0 doesn’t seem to have satisfied Flamengo’s desire. The club now has the best campaign in the group stage, which is very important in the Copa Libertadores. In the knock-out stage, the 16 clubs are divided into groups: the clubs that finished first and second in their groups. The best first place plays against the worst second place, the second first place plays against the second worst second place, and so on.
In Curitiba, Paraná won against Maracaibo(2-1), and reached an important mark in the clubs history. This is the first time Paraná plays the Libertadores and already found its way into the knock-out stage.
