Boring Report for a Boring Squad
By: Bruno Romani | July 5th, 2007Dunga loves defense and last night, he paid tribute to the position that made his fame. Against the eliminated squad of Ecuador, the coach chose 3 defensive midfielders (Mineiro, Josué and Gilberto Silva) plus Júlio Baptista to feed Robinho and Vagner Love. It is 1994 back again without Romário and Bebeto.
This time, there’s only one talent carrying the team, Robinho. Again he decided to break off some of the monotony and got the penalty in the second-half that granted Brazil a slim victory. With the three defensive midfielders, the match was all focused in the two backs, D. Alves and Gilberto, but the poor performance of both players killed the only chance for creativity of the Brazilian squad.
Vagner Love played his best game with the national team, but he is far from being the forward it deserves. In the second-half, Dunga amazed everybody again. Brazil was winning the match, playing a bureaucratic match, and he decided to replace Daniel Alves by São Paulo’s defender Alex Silva. In other words, Brazil ended a match against all powerful Ecuador with 3 defensive midfielders, 3 defenders, plus Kleber, the left back from Santos. For Dunga, talents, like Diego and Anderson, deserve the bench.
Thank you, Robinho.

Too bad Diego isn’t playing. I absolutely loved what he did for Bremen last season. You might argue that he still gets a bit nervous on the big stage like eg Champions League matches, where he didn’t perform to his full potential. So I hoped he could probably gain some experience and confidence during the Copa America…
