After 4 years, Corinthians Beats São Paulo

By: Bruno Romani | October 7th, 2007

It was meant to be. The situations of both clubs are so different that everybody expected São Paulo to crush Corinthians. São Paulo leader. Corinthians fighting relegation. São Paulo collected titles in recent years. Corinthians has been facing a federal investigation. São Paulo had a 4 and a half years sequence without a defeat to Corinthians, who watched 14 matches pass by.

São Paulo created more chances. But it was meant to be. Goal-keeper Felipe is becoming an idol. He saved Corinthians once more. And with 6 minutes left, Betão, defender who never won against São Paulo since he became a professional, scored with a header. Symbolic. It was meant to be. I tell you again: Watch Felipe. He is national team material.

For the tournament, however, things remained the same. Cruzeiro did not win again when São Paulo lost points. The 0-0 against Goiás left them 11 points behind the leader with just 8 matches to go.

Corinthians did not leave the relegation zone. All the clubs fighting relegation won. Inter beat América-RN. Atlético-MG came back and defeated Sport with a 3-1. Atlético-PR got a simple 1-0 against Vasco. Naútico killed Juventude with a 4-1. The only club that seems convinced to spend a season in série B is Paraná. The club from Curitiba was destroyed by Figueirense by 4-0.

The fight for a spot in the Copa Libertadores is getting very thrilling. Palmeiras, Santos and Grêmio fight for 2 spots, given that the other 2 are very likely to stay in the hands of Cruzeiro and São Paulo. Santos and Palmeiras won. The first visited headless Botafogo and scored 2-1. Palmeiras got an important victory against Grêmio with a great match by Chilean Valdívia.

Finally, Maracanã received the biggest crowd of the tournament to watch one of the most traditional Brazilian derbies. Fla-Flu with flags, smoke, lights and chants. Both clubs have no great expectations in the league, no fights for the title or against relegation, but the fans showed up. And they made a beautiful party. The best dancer was Fluminense that got a 2-0 with Thiago Neves, who has just renewed his contract, scoring the second. For Flu, it’s great news that Thiago Neves has another 3 years with the club. He is talented.

hey Fabio, considering that when both clubs played for Campeonato Paulista earlier this year Sao Paulo defeated Corinthians with a 3-1, I think 1.5 years is not the right periodo of time. I’d say it’s a few months.

    cheers.
