Two Incredible Mistakes by Two Brazilian Goalies
By: Bruno Romani | April 30th, 2007April 26th was Goalie’s Day. This Sunday two Brazilian keepers showed how difficult their profession is with phenomenal mistakes.
In the first-leg of Minas Gerais State League, Atlético-MG crushed Cruzeiro in the big derby by a 4-0 score. In the 4th goal, scored by Wanderley, Fábio, Cruzeiro’s keeper, was still recovering from the third goal, scored a minute before, when Cruzeiro failed to control the ball in the kick-off. Wanderley stole the ball and shot from very far, given that Fábio was giving his back to the play. After the game, Fábio was very nervous and claimed that the game could not have started because he was getting the ball used in the play of the third goal. Wrong. That ball is considered “not in action.â€

In the first-leg of the Campeonato Gaúcho, Juventude and Grêmio tied 3-3. One minute after Juventude scored its first goal, reaching a 1-1 score, its keeper, the veteran André, left the big box to intercept a long-pass coming from Grêmio’s defense. His timing went completely wrong, and the ball bounced in front of him, reaching the forward Carlos Eduardo who had no trouble in scoring Grêmios second goal.

On that Fabio goal he didn’t even react after it was scored. It was like he was walking around in a coma.

Interesting that the Brazilian league doesn’t use the same ball that was scored in the first goal for kickoff. Normally, a keeper would have to fish that ball out of his net to get play restarted.
