US: New Destination for Brazilians?
By: Bruno Romani | April 7th, 2007In the past week, Amoroso and Edmundo, two players with brilliant but fading careers, were involved in rumors of eventual transfers to the US this season.
Amoroso was fired by Corinthians after 6 disappointing months, in which he scored only 4 goals. The forward did not resemble in anything the man who helped São Paulo to win the Copa Libertadores and the Club World Cup in 2005. Santos has plans to have him for the next stage of the Copa Libertadores, but his agent says he has a good transfer offer from an American club. Amoroso was top scorer of the Italian league by Udinese, the German league by Borussia Dortmund, the Brazilian league by Guarani and the Japanese league.
A few days later, Palmeiras officials shocked its fans by saying that Edmundo, the Animal, may leave the club to an unannounced club in the US. After the game against Ipatinga in which he missed a penalty, some fans changed their minds and said that the 36 year-old forward should “take a vacation in America.”
It seems after Beckham opened this new market, Brazilian clubs will have to face transfers not only of their geniuses, excellent, good, ok and mediocre players to all over Western and Eastern Europe, Japan and the Middle East, but American clubs seem to be fishing out for the old folks about to retire. Not a problem for a nation that has already around 5 thousand players around the globe, and still manages to have clubs in good situations when it comes to international tournaments.
If I am to put money on a guess of a Brazilian player moving to America in the coming years, I’ll choose Ronaldo. Wait and you will see.
