sorry frost...

this is the deal:

the top 4 advance to Copa Libertadores. The fifth brazilian team in the libertadores is the Copa do Brasil Champion. Copa Libertadores is possibly the most desired tournament in Brazil.

From the 5th to the 11th, clubs go to Copa Sul-americana. Copa Sulamericana is pretty much ignored by most Brazilian clubs.

The only club that has the "benefit" of playing Libertadores and Copa Sulamericana in the same year is the Brazilian Champion.

Still attempting to uncerstand, Bruno. The top four play in various international Copas, right? But which is accorded to what position, and (even more important perhaps) how much attention/importance is attached to this international play - in contrast to play within the Serie A league? I get the feeling, based on SaoPaulo playing its reserves against other out-of-country Copa matches, that they're really not viewed as important as we might otherwise think - true? Your comments and enlightenment would be appreciated.
