Quick Predictions for Campeonato Brasileiro

By: Bruno Romani | May 9th, 2008

Still with the state championships echoing and Copa do Brasil and Libertadores driving more attention, Campeonato Brasileiro starts this weekend. And this blog cannot help itself and post a few predictions. Last year worked pretty well.

The title won’t fall outside these 6 and a Libertadores spots belong to all of them:

Inter: Fernandao, Nilmar, Guinazu and Alex, one of the best Brazilian players in the season. Need more than that?
Palmeiras: Huge investments, great players and a respectable coach.
Sao Paulo: Not the best football of the season, but the club and especially its coach love a long league.
Flamengo: Good line-up and a crowd that makes the difference. Need to overcome the Libertadores tragedy.
Cruzeiro: Like Flamengo, it needs to forget Libertadores. And some of their players are on top shape.
Fluminense: Great line-up.

6th to 10th:
Santos, Vasco, Sport, Botafogo, Gremio

11th to 15th:

Coritiba, Atletico-MG, Atletico-PR, Figueirense

Relegation:

Ipatinga: Too young and growing up is not easy.
Portuguesa: Mediocre campaign in the state championship. Relies entirely on forward Diogo.
Goias: Like last year, the club remains fragile and counting on veterans, like Paulo Baier.
Vitoria: Returns to serie A are always painful
Nautico: Small investments, and lost a few key players, like Acosta, from last year.

    & Grêmio and Figueirense?

can’t agree with you when you say ‘returns to Série A are always painful’. since 2003, only one of the newly promoted clubs has gone straight back down.

I agree with “frost” that Flamengo with a new head coach could meet some difficulties in this season’s Brasileirao. And the team has a group of talents like Ibson, Marcinho, Juan and Cristian, etc. But the elimination from Libertadores could has stunned the morale of the players. If the inexperinced new coach, Caio Junior, could not give confidence to them, the team might suffers a lot and be kicked out of Libertadores 09.
