Review of the Weekend: Lots of Work to be Done by Big Clubs
By: Bruno Romani | January 21st, 2008All the main state championships started this weekend, and much work still has to be done by the big clubs. Most of the big and traditional clubs won with lots of difficulties, such as Grêmio (3 – 0 against 15 de Novembro) in Rio Grande do Sul, Flamengo (2-0 against Boa Vista), Fluminense ( 2 – 0 Cardoso Moreira) and Botafogo ( 2 – 0 Resende) in Rio, and São Paulo (1 – 0 Rio Preto). What was seen was little tactical understanding and lack of physical preparation. In most of these games, the clubs relied on individual plays and accidental goals. But it could have been worse.
Vasco managed to lose to Madureira, 2-1, driving its fans crazy. Romário was right when he said his team was the weakest among the big 4 from Rio. In São Paulo, after a promising debut on Thursday, Corinthians got spanked 3-1 by São Caetano, a club that traditionally does not makes things easy for Corinthians. In Santos, the derby between the home team and Palmeiras was sleeping material. The final result could not be other than a zero draw. Santos still has not won. São Paulo is the only big club in its state to have 6 points. Finally, Inter just tied 2-2 against Inter from Santa Maria. A disappointing result.
Adriano Report:
Played well, despite attracting lots of defenders, but wasn’t the name of the game. Hit the post in the first-half with a header.
