São Paulo is the “Winter Champions”
By: Bruno Romani | August 12th, 2007As it expected, São Paulo did not have a hard time this Saturday at the Morumbi to beat Atlético-PR and pocket the symbolic title of “Winter Champions.” The tricolor opened the score board with just 5 minutes through Jorge Wagner. Atlético created a few chances after that, but it was unable to overcome the best defense of the tournament. The work of coach Muricy Ramalho, defenders Breno, Miranda, Alex Dias (plus the two subs André Dias and Edcarlos), and midfielders Josué, Rycharlisson (plus the youngster Hernanes) throughout the first-half of the league is remarkable. In 19 matches, the leader has allowed only 7 goals. It hasn’t conceived a goal in 12 matches in a row.
In the second-half, Borges increased the advantage for the locals, and made everything even easier. Since 2003, year in which the Campeonato Brasileiro took the European format, the Brazilian champions was also the winter champions. Can anybody stop them before December 2nd?
Flamengo 2 x 1 Naútico
In the lower portion of the table, Flamengo and Náutico fought a battle in the despair zone. Fearless and inspired by recent good results, Naútico attacked Flamengo and got a goal with 12 minutes. Cristian scored and own goal. 12 minutes later, another defender from Flamengo scored, but this time for his team. After a corner-kick, Fábio Luciano scored with a header in his debut with Flamengo. Luciano was successful with Corinthians and has just moved from FC Cologne.
In the second-half, tradition held true and Flamengo came back with just 3 minutes left. Roger passed the ball and the right back Leonardo scored. It was the first victory of Joel Flamengo since his return to the Fla. I’ve planned to make comments about the new jersey from Flamengo, but keep forgetting it. They look very cool. Very 80’s.
Sport 3 x 0 Juventude
Any doubts Juventude is gone? Anderson Aquino (2x) and Carlinhos Bala scored.

My seatmate (on a United flight from Chicago to PaoPaulo where they lost my luggage) will be crushed. Mr Rudi Borelli, a very nice gentleman, was once a wheel in the Juventude organization in happier days. Guess he was really smart getting out when he did (he’s president of an office furniture business in Rio/Sul now) but that’s still “his” team…
