São Paulo Wins and Stares at the Title

Rogerio Ceni leaves the goal and dribles Edmundo

What a night for São Paulo. The leaders of the league played a thrilling derby with Palmeiras, the 4th club in the race for the title, at Parque Antártica and won by 1-0. Jorge Wágner scored the goal of the match after fast sequence of passes. São Paulo now increases the advantage over Cruzeiro, the second team in the league, to 8 points.

This is so because Cruzeiro visited Paraná and just tied in 2 goals. The two goals by Cruzeiro, Wágner and Marcelo Moreno, were beautiful. Josiel, the top striker of this year’s tournament, scored twice for the locals. Cruzeiro also got bad news from the High Desportive Justice. Coach Dorival Jr. got a 120 days suspension after invading the pitch in the victory of his club against Botafogo. Midfielder Daniel got a 3 games suspension.

Sousa missed a penalty

The round was even better for São Paulo after Botafogo and Flamengo tied in the carioca derby in one goal. Juan in a good moment of his career scored again for Fla and Jorge Henrique tied for Bota. It could’ve been worse for the ex-leaders if Flamengo’s Souza had not missed a penalty-kick in the second-half. Other bad news for Botafogo is that the High Desportive Court suspended 2 players of the club. Defensive midfielder Túlio got a 120 days suspension and is out of the league. Luciano Almeida got a 2 matches suspension after breaking the leg of Reasco. Botafogo can appeal to the decision.

Grêmio visited Sport and lost by 2-0 and lost – Da Silva from the spot and Carlinhos Bala scored for the home team. Goal-keeper Magrao saved the locals.

Galo killed Corinthians

Two results surprising results happened this Wednesday. Four months after Emerson Leão left Corinthians, the coach faced his ex-team ahead of Atlético-MG and had his sweet revenge against a team that doesn’t even have a new coach yet. Atlético destroyed Corinthians with a 5-2. The first-half ended with a 3 -0 and headers were the main weapon of Atlético to score its goals. Corinthians now sees the relegation zone close again, besides watching Gustavo Nery getting injured. The situation is severe for Corinthians.

Inter was visited by the ex-Grêmio Renato Gaúcho and was humiliated at home with a 4-1. Thiago Silva scored the first and Thiago Neves twice, one in a beautiful volley. Neves is one of the best players of this league. Inter sees the Libertadores zone further way.

In the relegation zone, América, with 16 matches to go, passively watches the water level to increase. Now, it was Figueirense’s turn to defeat it with a 3-1. On the other hand, Juventude shows some signs of life by killing Goiás with a 2-0 in Caxias do Sul.
