Some things must be said…
By: Bruno Romani | July 28th, 2008Before Campeonato Brasileiro started, nobody talked about Grêmio as a possible candidate for the title. 15 rounds later, the club seats in first. This Sunday, in another key match for the title put Grêmio and Palmeiras in a soaked pitch. The 1-1 tasted like victory for Palmeiras given the incredible amount of chances Grêmio just threw away.
Before the tournament started, Vitória was never grouped with the clubs in the top 4. Despite losing 2-1 to Atlético-MG, the club is up there.
So now, some things must be said: 1) Nobody is noticing, but Coritiba is growing. It reached the 7th spot after a 2-1 victory against Naútico.
2) Vasco has a very poor squad and it will have a hard time to escape relegation. This Sunday, Santos massacred Vasco with a 5-2. Kléber Pereira scored 3 times from the spot. Given the poor campaign Fluminense is also having, it lost on the weekend at home 3-1 against Cruzeiro, it will not surprise me if coach Renato Gaúcho leaves Fluminense and rejoins Vasco.
3) Inter is as good as it is unstable. Losing against Ipatinga, last club in the table, has no excuses.
4)São Paulo is very much alive for the title. It beat Portuguesa 3-1. Not only that, but the draw of Grêmio and Palmeiras, the defeat of Vitória and the 0-0 draw between Flamengo and Botafogo made the perfect weekend for the club from São Paulo.
Finishing the weekend, Goiás lost at home for Sport 2-1. And Atlético-PR and Figueirense made the horrible match of the weekend. 0-0.
This is what the table looks like:
1 Grêmio 29
2 Flamengo 28
3 Cruzeiro 27
4 Vitória 26
5 São Paulo 26
6 Palmeiras 25
7 Coritiba 23
8 Internacional 22
9 Sport 21
10 Figueirense 20
11 Botafogo 19
12 Náutico 18
13 Atlético-MG 18
14 Atlético-PR 17
15 Goiás 17
16 Vasco 16
17 Portuguesa 16
18 Santos 14
19 Fluminense 13
20 Ipatinga 13
