Valdivia Cries and Makes Corinthians Cry
By: Bruno Romani | March 3rd, 2008
The main match of the weekend was the derby between Palmeiras and Corinthians. Both sides fought for every inch of the field, keeping alive the tradition of the biggest Paulista rivalry. The first-half presented few chances with just one great save by Corinthians’ Júlio César, who was replacing Felipe. Corinthians showed a good defense, but its offensive men were no problem for Palmeiras. Lulinha is a big joke. The second-half came and one man started make the game his. Chilean Valdivia dribbled, passed the ball and attracted lots of fouls. With 30 minutes, he scored the goal that gave Palmeiras the 4th victory in a row against Corinthians. In the celebration, Valdivia pretended he was crying and justified: “They (Corinthians’ players) said I was a crying baby… well, when I scored I decided to cry. But I cried of happiness.”
The victory of Palmeiras changed very few things in the Paulista league. The 3 teams on the top are still Ponte Preta, Barueri and the leader Guaratinguetá, who appeared in the site of Fifa last week. The fourth club now is São Paulo, after the 2-1 victory against Mirassol. Adriano had another not noticeable participation, after last week’s crisis that resulted in a punishment by São Paulo of 40% of his salary.
In the rest of Brazil, big clubs are justifying their traditions:
-In Rio Grande do Súl, Inter beat Guarani 6-0 and Grêmio beat Ulbra 4-0.
-In Rio de Janeiro, the reserves of Flamengo beat resende 4-2, Vasco 4-0 Boavista, Botafogo 1 -0 América, Fluminense 3 – 1Cabofriense.
In Minas Gerais, Social 1 – 2 Cruzeiro and Atlético-MG 2 – 0 Ituiutaba
